Overview of LAN Hardware

LAN hardware includes the actual cabling and the infrastructure - the internetwork connections. Servers must be able to access other servers and users must be able to access information anywhere in the network. In client/server environments, servers send fewer packets per request than in other environments because only the results of requests are send back to the client. However, this may not ultimately decrease network traffic because client/server environments usually support more users than mainframe-oriented network.

There are five ways to interconnect Local Area Networks:

1. Repeaters
2. Bridges
3. Routers
4. Network hardware gateways
5. Backbone networks

The methods are listed in order of increasing functionality. Backbone networks are connecting networks; they are not pieces of hardware that connect networks.

Repeaters:

As a signal travels along a cable, it loses strength. If communicating stations are at great distances from one another, repeaters can be used to regenerate the signal back to its original strength. A repeater can also be used to extend the reach of a LAN. Repeaters can only be used when the Local Area Networks on both sides of the repeater are identical. They must have the same physical transmission characteristics and use the same protocols.

Bridges:

Bridges are used to connect Networks with different physical transmission characteristics and protocols. For example, a third-party bridge might be used to link multiple Ethernet Local Area Networks, each supplied by different manufacturers. Bridges are a simpler technology than routers. They operate at the Media Access Control sub layer of the Data Link Layer of the OSI model.

Routers:

A router is a hardware device that manages the route selection for data packets and for minimizing traffic loads on linked Networks. Router link logically separate Networks, permitting them to share traffic loads and prevent the choking that occurs in bridged Networks.

Routers are used to connect two different networks. Each network may have been implemented independently and include stations with the same address. Router performance is typically rated by the same two variables as bridges: filtering rate and forwarding rate, both measured in packets or frames per second.

Network Hardware Gateways:

Networks gateways are used to connect networks that are entirely different. Network gateways perform all the conversions necessary to go from one set of protocols to another, including:

1. Message Format Conversion.
2. Address Translation.
3. Protocol Conversion.

Backbone Networks:

Many organizations are now providing connections between Local Area Networks using backbone networks. Backbone networks are of a higher quality than the connected Networks and usually use microwave-based links.

Later on, the 75 Ohm category emerged, which can be recognized by the absent or the reduced dielectric at each mating end. For DS3 Telco central office applications, 75 Ohm BNC connectors are used, while 50 Ohm is used for RF and data.

A BNC connector is most commonly used for RG58 cables in order to terminate its coaxial cable. Once the BNC connector is joined to the RG58 cable, compound video is produced just like the one from the commercial video equipment. Dell U2311H Wakeup and Menu Fix

If you own a Dell U2311H monitor and you're using SpeedFan then your monitor may have some problems. Do you notice how the startup time and wakeup time for your monitor takes around 30 seconds. Yeah, that's not supposed to happen and is pretty annoying. This wouldn't be a highly rated monitor if we were forced to wait 30 seconds just for it to turn on or awake from a screensaver. For some strange reason, when SpeedFan is installed on your PC with a Dell U2311H it interferes with the wakeup time and locks down the monitor's menu. Now this is one of the most annoying things ever and was painfully difficult to troubleshoot the source of the problem. I suspect that many of you who own a Dell U2311H will eventually become susceptible to this problem as you play around with your computer's case fans using SpeedFan. I've devised a fix to the problem.

The Problem

- Takes a long time wakeup after turning your PC, returning from a screensaver, or switching or logging off users.
- The menu is locked.

The Fix

1. Uninstall SpeedFan. (If you can't find the uninstall through CCleaner or Windows Add and Remove, then go to the SpeedFan folder in Program Files and uninstall it using the.exe)
2. Turn off the PC.
3. Turn off the monitor.
4. Disconnect the power from the monitor.
5. Disconnect all cords from the monitor going into the PC. (USB, VGA, DVI, etc.)
6. While disconnected hold the monitor power button down for 5 seconds.
7. Reconnect the cords.
8. Power on your PC.
9. It's fixed.

The developers of FanSpeed don't know what the problem is and therefore can't provide a fix to it. So, if you can't use FanSpeed you should use your BIOS to change fan speed or perhaps invest in a fan controller. Regardless, I hope my fix helped you.

However, if you your monitor continues to suffer from these symptoms and you've never touched SpeedFan in your life then I recommend you follow the steps under The Fix and disregard step 1. If that doesn't fix the problem, then I suggest you contact Dell Technical Support who should either guide you through a fix or RMA it. In the client/server architecture, the back-end server manages the data resource; it stores, retrieves, and protects data. The server reviews the data requests and, if necessary, generates and sends data requests for other servers. The six types of servers are:

3. Data

5. Database

File Server:

File servers manage a work group's applications and data files, so that they may be shared by the group. They pull large amounts of data off their storage subsystems and pass the data over the network. When data from the file is requested, a file server transmits all records of a file and entire index to the client. The client either selects records (based on query criteria) as they are received or loads the whole file and its index into memory, then reviews it. File servers require many slots for network connections and a large-capacity, fast hard disk subsystem.

Application Server:

An application server is a machine that serves as a host replacement. When applications are downsized from a host, one option is to install the applications on a smaller machine that runs the same software and hook all the users to the new box. This process requires no modifications to the host-based application software. For client/server applications that are classified as host-based, the host is the server to the GUI-based clients.

Data Server:

A data server is data-oriented and used only for data storage and management. A data server is used in conjunction with a compute server and may be used by more than one compute server. A data server does not perform any application logic processing. The processing done on a data server is rule-based procedures, such as data validation, required as part of the data management function.

Compute Server

It passes client requests for data to a data server and forwards the results of those requests to clients. Compute servers may perform application logic on the results of the data requests before forwarding data to the client. Compute servers require processors with high performance capabilities and large amounts of memory but relatively low disk-subsystem capacity and throughput.

Database Server:

This is the most typical use of server technology in client/server applications. Most, if not all, of the application is run on the client. The database server accepts requests for data, retrieves the data from its database, and passes the results of the request back to the client. Compute server s working with data servers provide the same functionality.

Router is a hardware device that manages the route selection for packet data. Routers are used to connect two different networks. Each network may have been implemented independently and include stations with same address. If a LAN message is intended for another network, the router accepts it. Each individual router understands the entire internet topology. After a router determines the best route for a message, it is passed along the route and the address of the route.

External routers require a micro, two or more network interface cards, and router software. They support a local interface, remote interface and protocols; and can handle concurrent communication among different LAN access methods, such as Ethernet, token ring, and fiber distributed data interface. However, only nodes that use the same protocol can be linked. Router use the network layer address, they can determine the best internet work path between any two nodes. This might be a function of the cheapest, most cost-effective, least congested, highest data rate, least number of hopes between and nodes, or some combination of these factors.

The path between routers is decided by inter router communications protocols. The most popular are

Router information protocol (RIP) is a simple, vector-based, hop-count metric. All routers broadcast their entire RIP data base across the internet every 60 seconds, whether there are changes or not.

Open shortest path first uses a link-state algorithm that allows a router to dynamically monitor status changes of each link and broadcast those changes immediately.

Interior gateway routing protocol, developed by route vendor Cisco systems and it is an enhanced proprietary version of RIP.

Because each individual router understands the entire internet's topology, a router can automatically pick up a failed device's traffic load, there by rerouting traffic around the failed router. This network partitioning also means that the separate LAN can still function as local communication paths. A router internet is more secure than a bridged LAN because a communication device has access to the router's addressing capabilities only when needed. Router reliability is measured in mean time between failures. High end protocol routers offer redundant power supplies, hot swappable components, and fault-tolerant bus architecture.

Hybrid routers software can handle both functions. If the software cannot identify the protocol for the packet-routing request, it simply bridges the packet. Internal bridges included with such LAN operating systems as net ware and LAN manager can be used for routing functions. The distributed management environment provides the following characteristic as,

Distributed management-complaint software will not be available until 1994. As parts of the distributed management specification are complete, open software foundation is releasing snapshot versions to its members.

Object management group's object management architecture combines distributed processing with object-oriented computing. It provides a standard method for creating, preserving, locating and communicating objects, which can be anything from entire applications to pieces of applications such as graphical screens or complex number-crunching algorithms. Using this mechanism, cooperative-processing applications can be supported within a heterogeneous, distributed and network environment.

Also minute-by-minute temperature history is recorded in the device (and on the web server) thus ensuring no conflicts between the carrier and the customer. This solution is very popular in the cold storage logistics companies.

Camera

A camera can be integrated with VTS to periodically transfer still images to the web server. This helps in identifying the driver and no one can cheat vehicle owners anymore. Typically driver's image is sent once a minute to the server thus ensuring that there is no proxy-driver. This solution is popular with the bus / taxi owners with large fleets which are in cities other than their home town.

Operational difficulties

Accuracy of GPS

Typical GPS receivers provide an accuracy of 10 to 15 meters vertically and about 20 meters horizontally. GPS receivers usually require locking of four satellites to get valid data. Accuracy increases with increase in the number of satellites locked. The quality of GPS signal depends on the state of atmosphere, both its upper (e.g. ionosphere) and the lower layer that influences the weather conditions. Sometimes, on cloudy and humid days the GPS receivers may have problems with calculating its position.

Start up time

When the device boots up after a power down cycle it usually takes a couple of minutes to acquire the coordinates. This is technically referred as 'Cold Start' where the GPS receiver does not have valid almanac and ephemeris. It usually takes time to acquire valid almanac and ephemeris data. Once the data is obtained it is stored in RAM and can be further used to acquire data quickly. If power management is implemented and device wakes up after periodic time interval to capture locations, the time required to acquire locations is in 10's of seconds. This is technically referred as 'Hot or Warm Start'; here the GPS receiver has valid almanac and ephemeris data stored in RAM and only communicates with the satellite to get coordinates.

No GPS connectivity in mountainous regions

If for some reasons the GPS receiver cannot lock required number of satellites, location data cannot be obtained, in such cases there is partial loss of data. There is no solution to this type of situations, as the source itself cannot provide required data; however, these are extremely rare.

No GSM / GPRS in remote locations

It is a well known fact that all the places on the planet do that have GSM / GPRS service available. In such case the acquired GPS location data are stored in the device and once GPRS network is available the stored data can be transferred to the server. This essentially means that the tracking device needs to have considerable storage capacity to store few 1000's of location details. Some solutions offer GSM (SMS) to transfer the data in absence of GPRS connectivity. This helps in getting real-time data at places with GSM connectivity but no or weak GPRS signal. A few solutions also offer dual SIM functionality to ensure that connectivity hampered only in situations where none of the two service providers can offer any service. This is very useful in India!

Frequency of data logging

Data logging frequency from GPS module can be as low as 5 seconds to few minutes. Usually 5 seconds is required in very few cases. Data sampling rates typically varies for each requirement. Tracking systems usually can set this duration easily using web interface or SMS.

Defining Geo-fences

Geo-fencing is an extremely critical feature that all tracking solutions 'HAVE TO' provide. Normal solutions offer circular geo-fencing that would raise alerts when the vehicle moves out of an area. However for containers or high value goods transport it is extremely necessary to have a boundary drawn across the road. This type of geo-fencing along with stoppage reports virtually eliminates any theft of good. Defining a geo-fence along a boundary can be a painstaking activity; no user interface can really offer an enjoyable experience to define a geo-fence adjoining to a road. In such cases, reference runs can be used for fencing the roads quickly and with minimum user efforts.

Environmental impacts

Heat, vibrations, dusty conditions loose connections and other open environment problems have an impact on tracking vehicles efficiently. It is extremely necessary to install a well tested / enclosed device, especially on India roads which are not only rough but also bumpy at times!

This is a very tricky situation where the device can do nothing but log the information along with date time stamp and whenever there is connectivity (antenna is connected again)sends it as an alarm. This type of sabotage cannot be detected in real-time, however the information sent later can be used for post-mortem analysis.

Power wire cut intentionally

When the power wire is cut the devices operate on battery. They send an immediate mains fail signal to the server which than propagates this information to concerned people. The modern day devices are intelligent enough to distinguish between power cut and engine off situations.

Temperature sensors tampered or wire cut

In temperature sensitive container monitoring if optimal or required temperatures are not maintained huge losses can incur. Drivers intend to turn off the engine to save on fuel costs. The temperature sensors can quickly sense that and send notifications to server. To avoid this, the drivers might cut off the temperature sensor wires. When something like this happens the device can sense the sabotage quickly and notify the server via GPRS or GSM. Ways To A Change Partition Style In Windows 7

The Master boot record (MBR) file system format is used by Microsoft Windows 7-based computers having a hard disk size of less than 2 terabytes. In MBR the files are stored in a standard BIOS partition table. If your computer is having a hard drive with more than 2 terabytes data capacity, then the MBR format will not work.

For the larger hard drives, the GUID partition table (GPT) is used. It uses the unified extensible firmware interface (UEFI) method in order to store files. In Windows 7 operating system, you have options to change the partition style of a hard disk. You can do it from MBR to GPT and vice versa.

Before you start, don't forget to backup all your data. This is because changing the partition style will erase all the contents on the hard disk. You can use a CD, DVD or an external hard drive to backup your existing data.

Once your backup is taken, click the "Start" button on the taskbar and type "cmd" in the Search box and then hit "Enter." Type "diskpart" at the command prompt and again hit "Enter." Now type the "list disk" command at the "DISKPART" command prompt and then again press "Enter." All the hard disks connected to your PC will now be displayed. You will notice each hard disk has a unique number assigned to it like 0,1,2 and so on.

Now you need to type "select disk disknumber" at the "DISKPART" prompt. Then press "Enter." You need to replace the disk number of the hard disk of which the partition style you would like to change. An artificial intelligence system could indeed have a better chance of winning elections by merely surfing the news, finding out what was on everyone's mind, and then designing speeches to read from a Teleprompter which capture the essence of what people were thinking.

With a very fast processor, such as a supercomputer system, the AI presidential candidate would appear to be extremely smart, and be able to pull out references at will in a very short amount of time, just like IBM's "Watson" Supercomputer anytime it was in an interview. Being able to talk intelligently, and give great speeches that struck a nerve with what people were thinking at the time would be a superior advantage. In fact, an AI president might be fitter to lead, then a flesh, air breathing, organic human with all of its flaws.

Does that mean that the United States of America would be better served by a computerized president rather than an actual person? It would entirely depend on the level of technology at the time. In the future, the answer is of course yes, right now it's questionable, and there would be limitations. But that doesn't mean it would be impossible. There would be challenges, and the American people wouldn't be too happy if they found out the truth, or felt they were lied to later. Because they would want to know which humans are behind the curtain, pulling the strings of the AI President.

Isaac Asimov suggests that it is possible to have an AI computer which doesn't know it is a computer, which actually believes it is human, and also has a conscience, ego, memory of growing up, and everything else.
