Do Cheap Ink Cartridges Leak?

ByS Spencer-Mathews

Have you ever had a problem where you have spilt printer ink? It can be very messy! However, it is quite unusual these days for users to have an ink spill as genuine and compatible ink cartridges come in self contained units that rarely leak.

Spillage usually occurs if you refill your own printer ink cartridges and for that reason we usually replace our printer ink cartridges with properly manufactured ink cartridges. People seem to choose to refill their own printer ink cartridges because it is considered cheaper than buying new replacement ink cartridges. However, our experience is that if you cannot afford to pay for genuine printer cartridges then there is usually a cheap compatible ink cartridge available. Compatible printer ink and toner cartridges are often priced up to 70% cheaper than genuine ink cartridges.

However, mishaps sometimes occur and you may spill some printer ink. This article identifies some of the common remedies used to deal with leaking ink for Inkjet printers. Please note that the author has not tested any of these remedies and cannot vouch for their appropriateness and effectiveness.

Printer cartridges for Inkjet printers usually contain an aqueous solution that is readily dissolvable in water. After cleaning up the excess ink with a clean cloth most websites indicate that the resulting stain should be able to be removed with a cloth dampened in water.

If you have acted quickly then that may the extent of the required cleanup. However, more enduring stains can damage your printer, skin, or clothing and need more attention. The websites researched for this article advocate finishing the clean with rubbing alcohol, window cleaner, dry cleaning fluid, WD-40, a paste of water and baking soda, or hairspray. Be careful not to unnecessarily spray any printer parts. After applying your chosen solvent to the stain make sure you thoroughly rinse it off with water, dab dry with a clean towel and then air dry.

These recommendations are for liquid water based ink used in Inkjet printers. If you have spilt toner you will notice that it consists of a powder which needs to be carefully removed as it can cause problems if inhaled. Remember to clean up quickly; consider wearing gloves and wash hands thoroughly. If an irritation occurs or if you are concerned about your exposure then contact the poisons information line. If you have spilt ink inside your printer make sure you print a few test pages out to ensure there are no smudges on the roller etc.

High quality genuine ink cartridges are unlikely to leak. This is also true for good quality compatible cartridges that you buy from reputable suppliers. These printer Inkjet and laser toner cartridges come pre-packaged and are simple to install.
