Based on the 43XX print engine, the 4345 multifunction printer has more features such as the ability to fax, scan, copy, and e-mail documents. This is done with the addition of a hard drive, fax modem, document feeder and a flatbed scanner. The hard drive is used as a storage or spooling device. When a document or file is copied or scanned it will be stored on the drive until it is able to be sent via e-mail or fax. The flatbed scanner will scan or copy the documents to be printed, faxed or emailed. The 4345 uses the flatbed scanner to copy or scan the job and the laser scanner system to print the file. The formatter is used to receive and process jobs from the host system or computer. Both the formatter and the flatbed scanner use the same laser scanner and toner cartridge to complete the printing process.
Print quality defects on this printer can be a little tricky to diagnose and correct. Regular print jobs coming from the host system print fine, crisp and dark output. Yet when either a scanned or copied job from the automatic document feeder or flatbed scanner comes through there are problems. Most common being light print, blank and even black lines down the page. First thing that is checked or even replaced would be the toner cartridge and even the transfer roller. Which after replacing you find the problem still exists. So you take a look at the flatbed scanner glass. At first glance it looks fine. Then you take the page with the defect and line it up on the glass and you notice something on the glass that could be causing your defect. There might be some white out that wasn't quite dry before it was laid down on the glass or even some glue from a label that was scanned. Staples and paper clips are also known to get left behind on the glass. Keeping the flatbed scanner glass clean and free of any foreign materials is critical for maintaining optimum copy/scanning print quality.
Another problem that can arise from scanned or copied documents is that the copy comes out much lighter than the original. The printer doesn't make the darkest of copies to begin with but there is a noticeable difference from the original. Replacing the print cartridge makes no difference to the copy quality. In this case calibrating the scanner using the procedure that is resident on the printer should help to clear this up. The printer will generate and print a page to be used for the calibration process. There are step by step on screen instructions to follow. As with other printer calibration procedures sometimes more than once is required to obtain the desired results. If the first or even second calibration process has still not achieved the desired results, run the calibration procedure again as it will not hurt anything. This procedure not only helps with the print quality but also with the centering of the image on the pages of scanned documents. The plastic strip that comes with the automatic document feed roller kit acts like a dust and dirt catcher. This can cause lines that move, leaving you wondering what is causing this problem? Very simple to remove and replace. The plastic strip should be changed frequently. They can be ordered separately as well.
